Maybe you took a long hike without a map and find that you are rapidly losing sunlight and can’t find your way. In the blink of an eye, one could find themselves plunged into a survival scenario. This class will demonstrate some of the basics ranging from how to create a make-shift water filter, different tricks to starting a fire, how to use a compass and more. This workshop introduces participants to the sport of kayaking. Basic instruction and safety are covered on shore. Then, we head to the water to try out our new found skills. All equipment is provided, including life jackets. Water shoes or old gym shoes are recommended. Be sure to wear clothes that can get wet and consider bringing sunscreen, sunglasses and a water bottle. No previous experience is required. The launch area is easily accessible by a paved sidewalk from the parking lot. Ages 12 or older; $20/person/session. Ages 12-17 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Registration is required two days prior to each session date.

Last year the exhibit,"Abraham Lincoln: Self Made in America" came to the Chicago Southland Lincoln Oasis. The traveling exhibit was created by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The exhibit features eight kiosks and covers Lincoln's childhood, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, the 1860 Presidential election, the Civil War, the 13th Amendment and Emancipation Proclamation, his assassination and other important periods and events in his life. This is a temporary exhibit, so don't miss the opportunity to learn about a famous part of America's history!
