Do Dry January in the Chicago Southland with Mocktails and More
By Carrie Steinweg published December 19, 2024
We’re heading into a new year and it’s a time when people are re-evaluating their lifestyle and habits - sometimes establishing new healthy habits and maybe letting go of some not-so-good habits. If embracing Dry January is something you’re looking to incorporate into your life in the new year, here are a few places where you can indulge in a refreshing drink that doesn’t have any alcoholic ingredients.
Cooper’s Hawk
You’ll find two tantalizing cocktails among the list of wines at Cooper’s Hawk. The “Passion & Spice" is made with pineapple juice, passionfruit, jalapeño, lime and soda water with a tajin rim and “The Spa” is made with cucumber, lime, jalapeño mint and soda water. There’s also a non-alcoholic beer available.
Grady’s Snack N’ Dine
Besides sodas, flavored teas and lemonade, you’ll find a couple mocktails on the menu to enjoy with your meal. Try out the virgin Bloody Mary and virgin Piña Colada to sip on with their specialties.
Chuck’s Southern Comforts Cafe
While they don’t have a specific cocktail menu, the bartender will be able to make you a virgin Strawberry Daiquiri or virgin Piña Colada. They also carry a rotating selection of non-alcoholic beer.
Lynnie Que’s
Beer drinkers will have options like Coors Edge and Heineken 0.0. There’s not a dedicated mocktail menu, but you can always order a Shirley Temple or ask for fruit based drinks minus the alcohol. A Hurricane would be one example.
Bar Louie
Bar Louie has a menu of tasty cocktails that can be turned into non-alcoholic versions, including some fruity margaritas, like the Cadillac Margarita or Wildberry Margarita that can be mixed sans tequila.
Darlene’s
Want to do brunch minus the mimosas? Darlene’s offers a long list of beverages to accompany your eggs, biscuits and gravy or doughnuts. From a tajin lemonade or hibiscus passionfruit refresher to specialty lattes to a Dragon Blast (mango juice, white lotus plant based caffeinated syrup, dragon fruit syrup, fresh squeezed lime juice and club soda,) you’ll find something fruity or creamy or flowery to satisfy whatever your taste buds are in the mood for.
Spotlight Lounge & Restaurant
Virgin versions of Piña Coladas and Daiquiris are offered along with a number of non-alcoholic beers, including O’Doul’s.
Hooter’s
At Hooters, you’ll find a non-alcoholic beer option and a number of Margarita, Daiquiri and Piña Colada varieties that can be prepared as non-alcoholic versions.
Bonefish Grill
On the non-alcoholic cocktail menu, you’ll find virgin Lime and Strawberry Daiquiris, Piña Colada, Bloody Mary and a sparkling blueberry refresher.
Papa Joe’s of Orland Park
Besides non-alcoholic beer, you can get a Caribbean Margarita without the alcohol and also a drink called a Lava Flow, which is a Strawberry Piña Colada mix.
At The Office Sports Bar & Grill
A virgin Margarita, Bloody Mary and Moscow Mule are available along with some alcohol free beers, including Corona.
Hidden Mana Cafe
Here you’ll find a non-alcoholic Mojito, a Shirley Temple and a Mango Fizz.
The Carraig Irish Pub at Chicago Gaelic Park
The menu doesn’t include specific cocktail recipes, but for fruit juice based drinks, like a Tequila Sunrise, you can request to have one made without alcohol. There are also non-alcoholic beer options, as well.
Fat Rosie’s Taco & Tequila Bar
Enjoy a fiesta at Fat Rosie’s with a number of Margaritas that can be made in virgin form - or sip on a Jarito’s soda or horchata.
Labas Seafood Steak & Wine Bar
Check out the seasonal non-alcoholic flavors that currently include an apple cider spritzer or a pumpkin spritzer. Ginger beer is another fizzy option without alcohol.
Pinstripes
Try the signature mocktails at Pinstripes - the Ginger Rose (fever tree ginger beer, royal rose organic sour, pineapple juice, orange juice, rosemary, sugar rim) or the Berry Bliss (royal rose organic blueberry syrup, fresh mint, fresh lemon, sparkling water).
If you’re looking specifically for non-alcoholic beer, also try J.J. Kelley’s and at several Chicago Southland restaurants and bars, including Flossmoor Station, Copper Still Martini Bar & Lounge, Jenny’s Grill and Banquets and Balagio Restaurant, the bartenders will be able to create non-alcoholic versions of some drinks on their cocktail menu upon request.
You’ll also find spots in the Southland for delicious milkshakes, smoothies, coffee and more, including Robeks Fresh Juice and Smoothies, SoHo Sweets Creamery and Cafe, Kdulche Cafe and Gayety’s Chocolates and Ice Cream.
