Shop Small Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 as a way to support small communities. It can be a bit chaotic shopping for the deals on Black Friday, so take this opportunity while visiting Chicago Southland to enjoy shopping small.

Frankfort Shopping


Come on down...town for the holidays, as the Frankfort Historic Business Association (FHBA) merchants host a series of special seasonal events. Participating stores will open at 8AM and feature reverse progressive discounts that begin at 25% off. Shoppers are encouraged to make their very first stop at White Street Cafe, Elwood Alehouse, or Smokey Barque for breakfast and lunch specials.  Make certain to check out the Mojo Market at KidsWork Children's Museum,with popular toys from Melissa & Doug, Fat Brain Company, Magnatiles and more. IMG_0572Don't forget the furry friends too and head over to Chew On this Dog Barkery, where the shelves are full of squeaky toys, festive collars, toasty beds and even Bowser Beer so you can share a beer with your best friend. There will also be yummy treats the four-legged customers can sample. Downtown Frankfort features over 30 merchants ranging from gift shops to boutiques to specialty stores.

As for holiday shopping trends this year, the experts at FHBA said gift and home décor items reflect a desire for the comforts of house and home. Updated vintage styles are still popular with color palettes featuring earthier neutrals (cocoa, slate, pewter, navy) with rich bold partners(claret, emerald, eggplant) with pops of brighter colors scattered throughout. Running Excels, a specialty running gear store continues to see strong sales for fitness-related gifts. They also sell Feetures! running socks make great stocking stuffers! Both My Sisters & Me Boutique and This & That Gifts agree on a hot winter trend of ponchos, scarves and leggings, in neutral and bold colors made with soft, warm fabrics. Beat the Christmas Eve mall rush and shop in comfort with free expert advice! Lil’ Surprises Children's Boutique and Gift Baskets said that coordinated headbands bows are hot this year for little girls, along with apparel featuring, lace, ruffles, stripes and mixed colors and patterns. Lots of stocking stuffers on hand here!

Oak Lawn Shopping


In connection with Santa on the Green, the Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce is hosting Shop Oak Lawn Everyday-Small Business Saturday. This will include food, children activities, trolley rides, music and more to promote small businesses in Oak Lawn. Shop local and celebrate the holiday season at this fun, free family event. There will be free parking at the Oak Lawn Metra Station (9525 South Tulley Avenue). Collect stamps for a free canvas tote bag (while supplies last).
