In Tents Escapes (Camping in the Chicago Southland)
Travel Inspiration
Sleeping under the stars is something everyone should experience at least once – and in the Chicago Southland, you can have that experience at several forest preserve sites.
FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF COOK COUNTY
The Forest Preserve District of Cook County also has a limited number of Camping Adventure Backpacks available for free check-out at its campgrounds that includes binoculars, field guides, a compass, activity sheets and other aids to nature exploration. Find out more about camping facilities at FPDCC.com.
Camp Shabbonna Woods, South Holland
This site features small three-season cabins, mulch tent pads and a clearing for activities. Just a short walk through an oak woodland is Sand Ridge Nature Center, where you’ll find hiking trails, demonstration gardens, a replica log cabin and an education center with animal ambassadors. It also features ADA-accessible campsites, cabins and bathroom/shower building. There are weekend programs for registered campers between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Camp Sullivan, Oak Forest
You’ll be greeted to Camp Sullivan by a big red barn where large groups can rent bunkhouses. For more privacy, tent campsites are tucked in the woods a short walk from parking. RV sites with electricity are also available. The campground has access to the Tinley Creek Trail System that winds through gently rolling hills, along wetlands and ravines, and through prairies and forests. You’re also not far from two great forest preserve fishing holes – Turtlehead Lake and Arrowhead Lake. ADA-accessible tent sites, bunkhouses and bathroom/shower building are available.
FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF WILL COUNTY
You’ll also find locations within Will County where you can set up a tent at a primitive campsite. Campsites have nearby fire pits, accessible latrines and water fountain or hand pump (no water available during winter months). Permits must be purchased at least two business days in advance of your reservation, granting site access for 24 hours from noon until noon the following day. Pop your tent at the following sites:
Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve, Crete Township
Each site can accommodate up to six four-person tents and includes a fire ring and picnic table. The preserve has two ADA-accessible sites. Nearby amenities include 2.3 miles of natural surface and paved preserve trails, and the 3.17-mile crushed limestone Plum Creek Greenway Trail and Plum Creek Nature Center.
Messenger Woods Nature Preserve, Homer Glen
Campsites can accommodate two four-person tents. The preserve has two ADA accessible concrete slabs. Nearby you’ll find 1.98 miles of natural surface trail, and the Hawthorn Grove and Oak Knoll shelters.
