One of the rare opportunities to see a double wye rail interchange exists at the Park Forest Rail Fan Park. The park was opened in 2012, and the 40-foot elevated viewing platform gives you a spectacular view of one of the most important interchanges in the Canadian National system.
The park features the restored Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad Caboose #531 and eight interpretive signs that describe the history of railroads in Park Forest and the Chicagoland area. A 500-foot accessible boardwalk takes you up to the covered viewing platform that overlooks this unique interchange that features at least 32 trains passing by daily. Looking west from the platform, railfans can get a great view of the Metra Electric Line stopping at the Matteson Metra station. The park also connects with the Old Plank Road Trail, a paved rails-to-trails conversion that stretches 22 miles from Park Forest to Joliet.
