A NEW YEAR OF FUN IN THE CHICAGO SOUTHLAND

It’s almost 2022, and the Chicago Southland is ready to kick off the new year with a whole host of fun-filled events and activities. Check out some of the exciting things going on.

Get a chance to view vintage holiday decorations at Step Back into a 1950s Christmas Exhibit at the 1950s Park Forest House Museum in Park Forest. Free for children under 5, stop by every Wednesday and Saturday till January 5.

 

At the Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, you can enjoy Threads: Works in Fiber by Sonji Hunt, Donna Katz, Bonnie Peterson, Laurel Izard and Paula Kovarik. The exhibit explores diversity of various techniques and styles used in creating art from fiber. The exhibit will be running January 4 to February 3, every Monday through Thursday 9AM-5PM.

The Art of Giving is the annual art show and sale at Tall Grass Arts Association in Park Forest going on till January 8. Check out arts and crafts that make perfect gifts, or wonderful additions to one’s home.

At the Orland Park History Museum and Stellwagen Farm, you can experience Her Story: The Life and Times of Orland Park. The exhibit opens January 7 and highlights the significant contributions and achievements of women who have helped make Orland Park the community it is today.

Celebrate Mozart’s birthday at Opera Up Close: Happy Birthday Mozart! Enjoy the iconic artist’s 266th birthday with birthday cake and a champagne toast on January 23 at the Governors State University Center for Performing Arts. You can also check out Viva Momix, a combination of athletic dance, acrobatics, music and costumes in an extraordinary theatrical experience. The show will be taking place on January 29.

At the Moraine Valley Community College Fine & Performing Arts Center, experience Still Rockin! A Hilarious Musical Tribute to Baby Boomers Featuring Pam Peterson and Jan Slavin. A musical that spoofs their own generation with lots of laughs and songs, you can enjoy “Still Rockin!” on January 23. On January 29 you can also check out The Second City Remix, a mash up Second City’s greatest hits and brand-new material along with their signature improvisation in this hilarious show.

Every Sunday of January, you can enjoy Winter on the Green in Frankfort at Centennial Park. From 12PM-2PM, enjoy some outdoor family fun with free cookies and hot cocoa, as well as different activities each week.

At The Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center in Mokena, check out the Indoor Flea Market on January 9 from 9AM-1PM. Vendor registration ends December 29, and shoppers are admitted for free.

Head on over to the Plum Creek Nature Center in Beecher on January 12 for Nature Play Day: Snow. Every month, the Plum Creek Nature Center hosts a nature-themed program geared towards 3–5-year-old children. January’s theme is snow, exploring the wonders of it and enjoying indoor and outdoor games, art and more.
